No. 204 of the 17th. ultimo, that the salaries of the
Overseers referred to in paragraphs 4 and 5 of Mr. Chatham's
letter be placed on a Sterling basis. If any of the Overseers
in question are not considered eligible for permanent appoint-
ment under the Sterling Scheme their services will be dispensed
with and competent men engaged from England if necessary.

I consider that the time has now arrived
for the appointment of an Assistant Engineer to succeed Mr.
You Fisher, whose promotion to the post of Executive Engineer was

approved in your Despatch No. 60 of the 19th. February last,

At May, 1905, duplicate
and I request that the Crown Agents be instructed to select
and send out a suitable person for the post. I enclose the
usual paper of particulars, and the appointment should as usual
be made on a 3 years' agreement at a salary of £360 rising in
the event of transfer to the permanent staff to £480 by
£40 triemially, the period served under agreement to count
for the first increment, together with a travelling allowance
of $244 a year. The special qualifications required are a
good knowledge of building construction and some experience
in road construction and works of a municipal character.
